As the year 2022 comes to a close, we find ourselves taking a moment to reflect on the past year and think about what the future may hold. EDC Economics has examined some of the major events and trends of 2022 and how they may impact 2023. The past year has seen record-high inflation, ongoing conflict in Europe, a worldwide economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and other challenges. It’s safe to say that 2022 has not unfolded as many of us expected. The high number of “unprecedented” events has raised concerns about whether we are living in increasingly unpredictable times. In fact, data from the Global Economic Policy Uncertainty Index shows that uncertainty is even greater now than it was during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. The VIX Index, which is used to measure market volatility, has fluctuated significantly, moving from a low of 16 to a high of 39.
