The Wally Meneray Memorial Award for Excellence in Risk Underwriting—known as the WAMMA—stands as a tribute to one of the most respected figures in Canada’s receivables insurance industry. Established in 2020 by the members of the Receivables Insurance Association of Canada, the award honours the legacy of Wally Meneray, an exceptional risk (buyer) underwriter whose influence continues to shape the profession.
Wally’s career in receivables insurance began in the early 1990s, where he first experienced the industry as a credit manager for Sharp Electronics of Canada. In that role, he quickly recognized the strategic value of receivables insurance, helping guide his company to become one of the largest policyholders in the country for domestic coverage. As the market expanded across North America, so did Wally’s reputation—earning recognition for his sharp insight, tireless work ethic, and unwavering commitment to fairness.
It was only natural that his talents would lead him into underwriting, where he continued to build a reputation that transcended borders. Colleagues and competitors alike admired his integrity, intellect, and dedication to doing what was right—not just what was easy.
The WAMMA celebrates professionals who embody these same qualities. Recipients demonstrate deep expertise in receivables insurance, contribute to the development and mentorship of others in the field, and strike the critical balance between protecting insured clients and enabling their growth.
As the industry continues to evolve, the award serves as both a recognition of excellence and a reminder of the standards Wally set.
Know someone who exemplifies these values? Nominations for the 2026 WAMMA are now open—an opportunity to recognize those carrying forward a legacy of excellence. You can find the nomination form here as well the details of the previous WAMMA recipients.
